I have some major philosophical problems with "competitive theater," but over the years I've learned that there's real value when students watch other school companies at work, get exposed to new scripts and performance styles, and begin to articulate what makes a performance come alive--not to mention the lessons in setting, striking and performing a show on an unfamiliar stage. And even I will admit that bringing home trophies often brings students into the theater for the first time, either as performers, technicians or audience members.
